Victor D. Spark was a prominent New York City appraiser and art dealer. He specialized in Old Masters paintings as well as some 19th and early 20th century art. He grew up in the hotel business with his father which would come to serve him well later in life.
His father worked in the hotel business and owned hotels in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Europe. Once World War I started he joined the United States Marines. After his discharge, he returned to NYU and majored in French. It was an interest he had acquired during his while stationed in France during World War I. After his graduation he married his love Nina. Then they went to Europe to help his father manage a summer hotel. While in Europe his eye and his heart for art flourished. Victor was in charge of decorating and furnishing the hotels he managed. He often purchased antiques, artwork, and furniture, helping advance his interest and knowledge in art.
He began working in a gallery, acquiring works of art and dividing the sales profits with the gallery owners. His taste and eye for art was gained primarily through his travels in Europe. He had a good business sense about what would sell for a profit in the United States. He was known to have made frequent art buying trips across the United States. He was known to visit Boston and Philadelphia and then return to New York with paintings that he sold. He never owned a gallery, but he would occasionally hold exhibits, such as one titled “101 American Painters,”. It is widely understood Victor specialized in 19th to early 20th century American art, he did however sell European art. He would acquire art during his many buying trips to Europe after World War II. Spark continued his work selling paintings to museums, collectors, and other art dealers, until the 1970s.
